Chesterton (18-2) vs Merrillville (16-4) - February 25, 2008 - Region Sports.com - Depth isn’t a problem for Jim East’s team, which goes eight to nine players deep a night. How far this team goes, however, will depend on the guard play of seniors Bo Patton, Arieus Stephenson and Mario Stapleton. They are the experienced leaders of this year’s Pirates. They must lead, but also get help from the supporting junior front-line players of Jonathan Nwannunu, Ryan Smith and Dolapo Macarthy.

Number 2 - Merrillville (2) 0-0 - The Pirates have been quietly in a hammock, swinging lightly in the winter chill and sipping ice-cold lemonade. Not much to do when there are no games. Zzzz. Thanks to the football team's success, Merrillville plays its first game tonight at Chesterton. It's hammock time.

East is counting on some big things from Bo Patton, who got a lot of minutes last year as a sophomore in a support role. "I believe this is going to be Bo's breakout year," East said

But on the next possession Merrillville’s Bo Patton drove for two of his game-high 19 points and then the Slicers missed four straight free throws, including the front end of a one-and-one, as the Pirates built their lead back to eight, spread out the court and started to burn the time.

The biggest challenge Friday night for the Slicer defensively was slowing down Patton. The junior hurt LaPorte all night driving to the basket for layups with his biggest bucket coming after Kus’ dunk. The 5-foot-10 guard sliced right down the middle of the lane to extend the lead back up to six.

“That was huge, huge,” East said. “Bo is my veteran. He started last year as a sophomore and I thought he came up with some big plays. That’s what we’ve been waiting on from Bo, he’s really solid.”
